SMT & WAMI PROJET
Do Black lives matter in Italian Fashion?
This fall, SMT dedicated its exceptional knowledge in the knitwear sector to a new Made in Italy, never mentioned before, diverse and inclusive, staged at Milan Fashion Week last September.
We Are Made in Italy (WAMI), an initiative dedicated to the issues of inclusion of BIPOC (Black Indigenous People of Color) talents in the Italian fashion panorama, a project founded in 2020 by the designers Stella Jean (the only Black member of the Camera Della Moda Italiana) and Edward Buchanan, together with Michelle Francine Ngonmo, founder of the Afro Fashion Association.
For the first time in the history of Italian fashion, WAMI gave voice to BIPOC talents who, having never been able to count on the support of the great Italian brands, have remained invisible figures in the world of Made in Italy. SMT accompanied the designer Romy Calzado in the path of discovery of Knitwear as Italian manufacturing excellence through the development of three styles, proposing and experimenting with new knitting techniques to realize the dream of a collection in her name.
